Block Party Appetizer: Shy Girls

| July 24, 2014

James Blake, The Weeknd, How To Dress Well. All these sounds have one thing in common—they’re sultry and sexy. And you can now add Shy Girls to the list of modern R&B crooners taking over the music scene as of late.

Shy Girls is actually Dan Vidmar, a Portland native who began his journey back in 2011 while working at an emergency room during the day.

After Dan saw a void in the Portland music scene—which was dominated by indie rock—he vowed to do something different. His hushed falsetto-like vocals do just that, taking listeners straight into ’90’s slow jam territory. Just don’t call it baby-making music, which he thinks is a cop out.

His influences range from Boyz II Men and Backstreet Boys to Luther Vandross, claiming he’s, “able to find musical value in a lot of material that my friends scoff at.”

For those feeling like a chilled-out makeout sesh at Block Party? Head on over to Shy Girls’ set on Friday, July 25th at 4pm on the main stage to feel some good lovin’.
